Why would you request that they be removed just because you are not a fanatique, be open minded....education is the nourishment of the mind....ignorance is what puts us where we are today.
Frankie.
We still do not know the fate of some who disappeared. We assume they are now dead. You are a lucky dude strolling through rue Montalais at these time.
We tend to invoke what was then inexcusable to villify the current.
The regime kidnapped plenty of our haitian brothers. Point final.
More than 1 million haitians moved out of Haiti during the regime. Do you know why? They were afraid of getting kidnapped and killed. The facts. Ask some of your friends.
You claim that we must thank President Magloire who had the vision for the Peligre Dam .I agree with you. However don't you think that someone who managed to live in a mansion in Jamaica estate New York for 30 years "sans lever ni lou ni leger" with the salary of a Haitian army officer could have saved Haiti from its economics devils?
I grew up under the Duvalier regime, not once it occurred to me that I could be kidnapped and almost every night I was in rue Montalais, rue des casernes or rue pavee at 2 am and I am talking 1964, 1965, 1966.
Duvalier killed , killed and killed but guess what? Every single one of them looks like the so called leaders who have governed Haiti for the past 23 years.
All of them were fighting for freedom of speech. Look what they did with their freedom of speech."VOYE MONTE" with no direction.
All of them wanted a Haiti <riche et prospere>. 23 years after the departure of the Duvalier look how <riche et prospere > is Haiti.
Port - au - Prince is buried under its own garbage. Those in power have nothing to do with it. The garbage just came from the sky and fell on Haiti cherie dropped by Francois Duvalier.
Dear Flo, when Jean Claude Duvalier left Haiti, I had great hopes. Moun de bien allaient diriger. Look Look and look again what they did to your Haiti cherie, my Haiti cherie.,
can you begin to understand Duvalier?
The international community has given to your Haiti Cherie my Haiti cherie more than 193 000 000 dollars in the past 2 years .No one can say what happened.<Pas posem questions> Duvalier killed 50.000 Haitians. Do you know how many Haitians died , and could have been saved if these funds had been used in the right way?
My dear Flo, wake up .The people who today govern Haiti are much worse than Duvalier and I challenge you to prove me otherwise.
Remember the aeroport jet? It was built with not a cent from any foreign country and that is a fact. Francois Duvalier spent 13 plus years in power and received not a cent from any foreign country. That is a fact . In the past 23 years, do you know how much money was sent to Haiti and how those who have stolen it are still well respected in all spheres of the Haitian society?
Again, I am not here to defend Duvalier but the facts are the facts and it bothers a lot that while our Haitian brothers are eating mud cookies some are playing the same old game of Politic as usual.
We have a mentality problem in Haiti and you are part of it. I am sorry to say. We all think we can become president and only us can save Haiti. We look for the solution of the problem everywhere but where we have to. If from 1804 until today we did not have those Charles Oscars bent at becoming president perfas et nefas
maybe we would have had a softer version of Duvalier and a better Haiti. Just maybe.
I have followed the exchanges very closely. Of course some interesting points have been made, not foreign to most Haitians.
In all fairness, I have noted allegations about propagation of the Duvalier's regime. I have said in the past, it is a sad & painful page of our history. Flo the Avenger started well & perished in " the Voye Monté". d'après ta note de ce matin.
Let's see what she thinks about other albums where names and pictures of the victims are shown. (ref album http://pikliz.fotki.com/very_old_pictures/photos_dantan_in_haiti/numadouin.html) We can converse, argue, disagree in a sane & respectful manner
Again, it is our history however glorious, gruesome, regretful & sad at times. (Manny Ardouin) . Kimbe la
So far I have enjoyed your comments. However the ones you posted this early AM on the site were quite distasteful. That is why I had to delete them. Let's us continue to dialogue with mutual respect. THE ALBUM IS THERE TO STAY. I really did not expect that from you. You seem to be such an intelligent and well spoken person. Peu importe si Duvalier etait un pshychopath - malade mental ou n' importe quoi.....Have a great day.
Let's all say never again. No need to glorify this KILLER.
On the contrary,he did not even mentioned much about Duvalier himself.
To the sender of that email and to all concerned:
First let me thank you for your comment and email. I understand that you are fuming and you resent some of my publications on this site. However I admire you sense of respect. After all, we can disagree and at the same time interact. It's all about dialog - discussion - critical exchange - frank speech.
It is a bit difficult for me not to respond to your comment & email; I understand quite well where you are coming from. Your arguments are very strong in all the issues you have addressed. Under the Duvalier' s regime, it was a nightmare for the average Haitians. He used intimidation to achieve his goals. He also killed several innocent people. That is a part of our history.
The same can be said about the Colons Français in St. Domingue killing the slaves and the same of Dessaline' s massacring the French.
Should we not talk about that period? As a matter of fact, more books are written about this period than any other period of our history (1793 to 1804). Furthermore, it is the most important chapter in our "terminal curriculum". It is also the bloodiest part of our History. I do not know of any nations where the founding father has been killed and his body mutilated by an officer of the army & did not even get a funeral. We talk about that every day for the past 200 years or so. We are not propagating or exalting Petion for masterminding Dessaline's death, are we? If I could find one hundred interesting pictures of Petion and write a short essay about him, would that constitute a propagation of his ruthlessness?
That is our history and it must be told like it is.
However, I maintain that neither Pikliz nor myself are propagating the image of a ruthless dictator and his ideologies. On several occasions, I have felt that my views were contrary to other members of our staff. Not everyone is going to agree with me, neither will I agree with them or every one all the time. That is understandable. I did not seek their approval to publish this album, neither I felt that I should have. I honestly believe we are doing a great job, that is to entertain, inform and educate as best as we can.
If we are to move forward as a nation, we need to work together even if we disagree.
Personally, I think perhaps by talking about this ruthless dictator, by looking at a picture of this " little timid doctor" who almost lost the reins of power in 1958, how can he became such monster. We need to talk about that loudly for that NEVER to happen again.
The same way Jews are saying "never again", blacks in America think slavery was the most despicable thing, Haitians must be certain we will never, never have another Papa Doc.
What "not making these pictures available to posterity" would have accomplished? Never in my narrations, I have glorified Papa Doc. I dare anyone to point it to me, if I have. (Although for some Haitians he may have been a good president). I take full responsibility for putting that album on Pikliz. However I will not accept the fact that I am propagating his philosophy on the Internet.
If you and/ or someone dear to you were a victim, I deeply regret that from the bottom of my heart. My family, to a certain extent suffered under the Duvalier's. I grew up under that regime and I know what it's like to live in Haiti from 1957 to 1971 when I emigrated to the US.
Finally what remarks have I made in my narration ( which I take full accountability for) that compelled you to say that?
As a fellow Haitian, I feel your pain and you have the right to express your griefs. However it's time to move forward like the Jews, like the Blacks in the US, like the Russians, like the Germans etc etc...... Duvalier ne mourra jamais.
We need to be true to ourselves. We need to reshape our character. It's time to concentrate our energy into helping in any way we can.
I am harboring feelings of anger and resentment towards you because I just realized that you are the one who put all that Duvalier stuff on pikliz. You should read and reread what really happened during the Duvalier's era and the permanent damage and pain to thousands of Haitian families who never received any justice until this day for their loved ones who were butchered by that monster and his cronies before you get nostalgic about the past. I think you should review and cancel some of those pictures from your presentations. This is not history; its propagating the image and the memory of a murderer, his regime and ideologies. He is best forgotten. I have some serious dirt to write about the macoutes when I have more time. You can delete them all you want but I am going to keep a file, for as long as those pictures are on the Internet on pikliz. What are you: a traitor! Perhaps I was in a better position or around people who knew what was really going on with the Duvalier's; anyway politics is a double edge sword and should not be talked about lightly. Stop the nostalgia and face the real facts about Haiti.
Personally, it's a pleasure to respond to your comments; I will tell you this:I am very sick today with laryngitis and it's raining outside therefore I am having great fun interacting with every one today. However you simply cannot repeat the same comments under different photos. We at pikliz are very sorry about the way you feel towards papa doc. You are entitled to your own opinions. We are not promoting Duvalier. If you are able to get pictures of any presidents before his rein ( as long as those pic are not already on pikliz forward them to us and we will publish them. By the way, I like your pseudonym.
Known International Facts:
During the Francois Duvalier dictatorship, educated professionals fled Haiti in droves for New York City, Miami, French-speaking Montreal, Paris, and several French-speaking African countries. Some of the highly skilled professionals joined the ranks of several UN agencies to work in development in newly independent French speaking African countries such as Ivory Coast, and Congo. The exodus created a brain drain that exacerbated an already serious lack of doctors and teachers; the country has never recovered.
2. Duvalier's government confiscated peasant land holdings to be allotted to members of the Tonton Macoutes; the dispossessed swelled the slums (bidonvilles) by fleeing to the capital to seek meagre incomes to feed themselves. Malnutrition and famine became endemic.
3. Duvalier used both political murder and expulsion to suppress his opponents; estimates of those killed are as high as 50,000.
1. The exchange rate of 5 gourdes for 1 US dollar under Duvalier has nothing to do with Duvalier himself; the exchange rate was fixed by the Americans during the occupation in 1919 in order to determine how much money to loan Haiti to pay off french debts, and other claims against the Haitian government.
2. If we had electricity 24/7 in parts of Port-au-Prince ( the province being always ignored by the executive, always), we must thank president Magloire who had the vision for the Peligre Dam to irrigate the Artibonite Valley since early 1950's.
3. Ciment d'Haiti, a french investment and Minoterie opened up under Magloire as his administration tried in vain to attract significant foreign investments to Haiti.
4. HASCO (Haitian American Sugar Company) has nothing to do with Duvalier; HASCO is a spinoff of the National Railroad Company that never was - start date/year 1911
5. Certainly, Port-au-Prince is burried under its own garbage nowawadays.
The metropolitan area was not as bad as it is today but most Haitians never saw all of Port-au-Prince and its surrounding shanty towns: Pelerin, Sans Fil, St. Martin, la Saline, Fort National were always as bad under Duvalier as they are today.!Nowadays we have more bidovilles such as cite Soleil etc. Besides, the Port-au-Prince service d'hygiene was instituted by President Sudre Dartiguenave.
From an economic perspective: : You cannot do comparison across historical time and space. You can only do parallel between different administrations and regimes. Haiti has been and is in a "perpetual decline!"
It was declining under Duvalier as well as presently; it's just that the rate of decline nowadays is steeper.
It's in freefall basically. So please let's not get nostalgic about the Duvalier era and celebrate a killer responsible for the death of an estimated 50,000 thousand Haitians. Let's look at the facts with a clear mind. ( the population of Haiti was at 6million people during Duvalier era, nowadays its at 9.5million.) There has been a boom in the illicit drug trade, plus the United States has been returning planes loaded with criminals every week to Haiti.
Ps: I would like to see a dramatic reduction of the Duvalier pictures on this site, for no one would dream of spreading "Hitler's picture on the internet and make him look like a boyscout. We Haitians should do better and not celebrate a Killer of Haitian families.
