Photos and narration by Frankie Morone.

Alix Jacques, also known as "Doc Lulux" is a guitarist, a bass player and a songwriter who has been a working musician for over thirty years. Personally, I think he is amongst one of the most innovative and talented musicians. He chose at a very early age that he would make a career in music; he was deeply inspired by songs he heard on several radio stations as well as the many records his parents played at home; he began to diligently plan for that.

Alix was born in Cap-Haitien on July 9th. 1952. While still a teenager, his parents immigrated to the United States. Not quite seventeen, he began to learn how to play the guitar with Jackie Roc. Barely twenty years of age, he then formed "les As Noirs de NY". Then two years later, he joined "Les Difficiles de NY". By 1974, he was playing with "Original Shleu Shleu" as a freelance musician sometimes at the electric guitar other times as a bass player; by 1975, he wanted to have his own band. With the help of a few talented musicians such as Gerard Daniel, Pantal Guilbeau and Lesly Lavenanet just to name a few, he founded the group "DJet X". They played in a multitude of popular night clubs and had many hits such as "Love to love you" as well as many more.

In 1979, Alix decided to improve his musical skills. He enrolled himself at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. It's while attending this prestigious school of music, that he was taught how to play the piano; further more he learned music theory and harmony.
In 1980, he recorded his first solo album "Cole Cole" and 2 years later another one named "Symphonie Inachevée" By now one could feel that he was mastering the art of an achieved acoustic bass player.

In 1986 after a meeting with the famous guitarist Edouard Richard, and other talented musicians such as F. Lasfargeas and Viviane Rangon he founded "U turn Band". Again, this band was very popular and liked by several youths.

In 2004, a more mature Alix decided to return to the "Brooklyn Conservatory of Music". This time he studied the acoustic Bass; that same year, he met Tetsu and Massa, 2 talented Japanese musicians. Out of that meeting with them, a trio was formed. It was baptized "ATM".

The year 2008 brought some innovations in Alix's musical career. He joined "The St. Albans Jazz Ensemble" and 2 years later he studied acoustic bass with Yoshio Aomori.

By now, Alix was confident enough to climb another step; He, in 2012, founded the "Afro-Caribbean Jazz group". The musicians are: at the bass, Alix Jacques aka "Doc Lulux" maestro, trombonist Randall Watson, trumpeter Marco Coco, saxophonist Richie Breathwaite, pianist William Bill Valicenty, congas Camille Armand and finally at the drums Phoenix Rivera. They are based into the New-York City Metropolitan area. They play different styles of music in various tempo. It is not my intention to write a long text about them but I will tell you this in three simple words: "they are awesome". They have interpreted "Siboney" and the solos were so extraordinary that they came short to receiving a standing ovation. Each musician had their sheet of music in front of them; however as anyone will say, "music" is not always what is printed on a page; it's rather the improvisations as well as what come from that band. Their last Friday's performance at Mirelle Restaurant will be unforgettable.
I sincerely wish them lots of success. Doc Lulux is a brilliant and rhythmic acoustic bass player. Frankly, he uses every notes in the bass arsenal. He is not afraid of the instrument.

I invite you to take a tour in pictures of this "soirée extraordinaire". If you were not there, you certainly missed a lot. Hope the next time they are performing you will join them. Enjoy the pictures and as usual your comments are always very welcome. Thanks for the visit.
