Haiti, "Grotte Marie-Jeanne" in Port a Piment.

Grotte de Marie Jeanne is a large cave system located on the southwest coast of Haiti in the town of Port a Piment. It is formed on a small limestone plateau on the south central part of the Massif de la Hotte. It is potentially the largest cave system in the Caribbean, with a reported 1 kilometre of passage. However a formal survey has never been completed so the true length of the cave system is unknown.

The entrance has a tremendous amount of scenic value because of the tropical forest that it contains. The many entrances and skylights allow for the development of a unique cave ecosystem that has not yet been fully identified or studied. Within the cave system, a series of large, well-decorated chambers create an unusual morphology

I know the area quite well. I was the resident MD at Port a Piment in the years 58, 59. The area, (La Cote), is one of the prettiest in Haiti. However a grotte alone does not change the fortune of a country. Marie Jeanne will appeal to tourists of the spelunkers' variety and to speleologists. In general those folks are young adventurers of the thrill seeking variety. They don't have much money to spend and don't add much to the touristic wealth of a poor country like Haiti. Marie Jeanne will add to the attraction of the region but we need more. Security, clean lodgings, basic infra structures etc...
and MORE IMPORTANTLY a competent, less centralized, backwards, divisive group of dirigeants. Also let's not forget that grottes don't appeal to a big chunk of the human race, the claustrophobes. Marie-Jeanne is a good start but let's make it part of a total package.
    Signed : A Loving Haitien.

Mon pays aurait pu être plus magnifique que ca
si au moins on avait sensibilisé les gens là bas de ne pas couper les arbres mais les protéger.
